Cover your website with the right legal policies

Website Compliance. Bleh. Even the word compliance makes my brain switch off. And then there’s that annoying popup asking about cookies and GDPR on every single website. They can be annoying, but they are necessary. And even for us very small and solo business owners.

We need to make sure our websites are not getting us into legal trouble.

How to know if your website needs legal and privacy policies

You must have a good set of legal policies on your website. These include your privacy policy, cookie policy, website terms, terms of use, and any commerce-related terms.

If you collect any kind of data from your audience, like names or email addresses, or ask them to sign up for your mailing list, you need legal policies. This includes when they fill in a form on your website or use third-party tools like Dubsado, Google Forms, Typeform, or Salesforce. Even if you have a call to action button that take them to a different place to fill out a form - like a landing page - it’s your duty to let your visitors know how you’ll be using and storing their information.

And you definitely need Cookie Consent buttons for website visitors to either accept or decline and block if you’re using any website analytics to track your performance.

What you need to know before you create your legal policies

Things you will need to know before you get started:

  • What data you collect

  • How you use your users’ data

  • A list of all the tools plugged into your website

  • How you’ll store that data

  • What countries your users will come from
